The grapes for Domaine Chanson’s Bourgogne Rouge are sourced exclusively from select estate-owned vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, as well as several terroirs located in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune.

VINEYARD

The vineyards have clay-limestone soils. As with all their grower relationships, Chanson harvests all fruit with their team in order to maximize control over fruit quality and picking times.

WINEMAKING

The wine is for the most part left alone, as the philosophy is one of “infusion rather than construction.” The wine is vinified 100% whole cluster to extract a deeper color and enhance the structure and aromatic complexity. The major condition is that the grapes must be perfect in terms of ripeness and condition. The reds have a perceptible style as a result: beautiful aromatics with complex spice complementing fruit on the nose and palate. Chanson also strives to maximize the preservation of fresh fruit characteristics, which is why grapes are chilled immediately on arrival in a proprietary tunnel that provides a very quick chill with no oxygen exposure. Reds then get a long cold soak and maceration. Then, Champagne-style fractional pressing is practiced to gently extract the purest juice. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel on the fine lees with no batonnage. Oak is used conservatively, with no more than 30% for the reds.

VINTAGE

After a mild winter, spring settled down with important variations of temperatures and abundant rain which engendered millerandage (small berries). Summer was warm, punctuated by several heat waves and a few thunderstorms episodes which brought some water. The harvest started mid September under bright sunshine. The red wines of 2019 are crunchy and complex with a beautiful fruit combination.

TASTING NOTE

Bright red color. Scents of violet mixed with intense aromas of ripe black cherries and spices. Complex and well structured. Very pure fruit. Deep and tight texture. Elegant tannins. Long and generous aftertaste.

B.S.

"Ripe and with a balanced structure"

Wine Enthusiast - May 12, 2021 “This Beaune-based negociant house has made a richly dense wine that is packed with succulent black fruits and freshened with acidity. It is a satisfying wine, ripe and with a balanced structure.” - R.V.

Other Wines by this Producer

Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru Hauts Marconnets Domaine

White wines are very unusual in Savigny-Les-Beaune. The vineyards mainly produce red wines. However, Chanson decided to plant Chardonnay here too because of the particular nature of the soil. The wine shows aromas of exotic fruit mixed with floral fragrances.

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

Chablis, Burgundy

“Les Clos” is one of the most famous Grand Crus of Chablis. The area of production covers 24.75 hectares. The vines selected by Chanson are ideally located right in the heart of the plot. The upper part brings the minerality and the lower part gives a right character to the wine.

Beaune Clos due Roi 1er Cru Domaine

The vineyard of “Clos du Roi” is located below “Les Marconnets” on a fold in the hill. Chanson owns around 7.5 acres (approximately 35% of the total vineyard area). 2/3 of Chanson’s vines are planted with Pinot Noir. The plot is low on the slope and known to produce elegant, stylish wines for relatively easy drinking.

Savigny-Dominode 1er Cru Domaine

Savigny-Les-Beaune, Burgundy

Savigny is a modest little village in the Cote de Beaune. Savigny is known for being the most divided areas in Burgundy with its 22 Premier Cru vineyards located on one of two sides; the Pernard side and the Mont Battois side. The Premier Cru of Dominode is the best Premier Cru of Savigny. It’s mid-slope with great clay and limestone soil.

Santenay-Beauregard 1er Cru Domaine

Santenay-Beauregard, Burgundy

Chanson owns 3 hectares in this area, located in the Premiers Crus area of Santenay, a small village in the South of the Côte de Beaune. The plot is at the top of the hill and is positioned on two levels. The large proportion of stones gives to the wine a very special minerality which emphasizes the typicality of the Pinot Noir.

Beaune Clos des Féves 1er Cru Domaine

Beaune, Burgundy

Clos de Fèves is a Chanson “monopole” located in the very heart of the Premier Cru vineyards of Beaune. The vineyard, covering 9.4 acres, is located on mid-slope. It makes a complete, rounded wine, with striking depth and minerality.

Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses Domaine

Pernand-Vergelesses, Burgundy

Chanson owns a vineyard of 5.4 hectares in Premier Cru “Les Vergelesses.” The plot is located in a hollow at the bottom of the hill of Corton and its clay and limestone sol combination gives wines a very specific structure.

Gevrey-Chambertin La Perriere 1er Cru

Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

Gevrey Chambertin is the most famous appellation of the “Côte de Nuits” and the climat “La Perrière” is located in the heart of the Premier Cru area. The grapes are sourced from a partner winegrower but are picked by members of the Chanson team.

Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 1er Cru Domaine

Chanson is one of the major owners of Clos des Mouches with a vineyard of 4.5 hectares. This is a sunny terroir which benefits from an ideal location on the hill at the southern end of the vineyards of Beaune on a spur pointing towards Pommard. A plot of 2 hectares on the upper side of the hill is planted with Chardonnay on a limestone subsoil covered with sand.

Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Caradeux Domaine

Pernand-Vergelesses, Burgundy

This vineyard of 1.90 hectare is ideally located on mid-slope close to the hill of Corton-Charlemagne. Same soil structure and height as its famous neighbor. The only difference is the East exposure of the “Caradeux” which makes of this plot an exceptional “terroir” providing unique mineral characteristics.
