Wine Spectator’s Kim Marcus reports on the good news coming out of California: as Pinot Noir continues to expand across the state, rising quality and increased production of single-vineyards wines are gracing the market. Most of these wines are from the coast, where the cooler, maritime influenced climates are better suited for the variety.
The tasting report includes an interview with several winemakers, including Theresia Heredia of Gary Farrell Winery. Marcus exclaims that Gary Farrell has been “firing on all cylinders […] The winery makes a total of 20 different Pinot Noirs. To Heredia, tending to all of the single-vineyard bottlings is one of the most exciting aspects of working in the cellar. ‘There are different [winemaking] recipes for each vineyard,’ she explains. ‘Yes, it’s hard to keep track of all the vineyards, but I love to see the fruit characteristics of each. It’s a very dynamic job.'”
