Seven Expressions of One Grape

Dallas Wine Chick highlighted a recent Gary Farrell Winery tasting experience via Zoom on the site. The story offers a historical overview of the Russian River Valley estate, Winemaker Theresa Heredia’s background and an exploration of seven expressions of Pinot Noir, including Gary Farrell Winery Hallberg Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016.

The writer notes, “It’s not often that you get to try a variety of Pinot Noirs coming from different vineyards so you can taste the soil, climate and different terroir.  I had the chance to do that with seven expressions of one grape recently with Theresa Heredia, the winemaker for Gary Farrell Winery.”

The Hallberg Vineyard wine is described as a “dark, palate driven wine with a blend of the 667, 777, 828, Pommard clones and what is known as a “suitcase” selection.   This was a rustic wine with notes of earth, cherry cola, black tea, eucalyptus and spice.” Read what she had to say about the other six wines HERE

Named for its previous owners, the 100-acre Hallberg Vineyard is today owned and managed by wine industry veterans including vineyard manager Kirk Lokka. Nestled in the Green Valley sub-appellation, the site enjoys refreshing daytime breezes and cool nighttime temperatures. The strong marine influence means less severe daily temperature shifts so the vines never completely shut down, producing fruit with deep, dark color, great structure, silky tannins, darker fruit flavors and earthy characteristics. This blend is a composition of many of the best blocks on this cool, foggy vineyard site, which include clones 667, 777, 828, Pommard and a mysterious “suitcase” selection.
