How This Leading Tuscan Estate Uses Art to Communicate Wine

Forbes Magazine highlights Ornellaia as both one of Italy’s leading wine estates and a faithful patron of the arts. While it is no surprise that the legendary Super Tuscan producer would be referred to as a leading estate, travel contributor Livia Hengel writes that Ornellaia has “long sought to distinguish itself and its wines through the art of storytelling.”

In order to conduct such a feat, Ornellaia launched the Vendemmia d’Artista project, which is a testament to how art can interpret, increase understandings and better communicate the ephemeral spirit of great wines. The feature includes an interview with Estate Director and leading enologist, Axel Heniz, who elaborates that “the idea behind the project is to convey the singularity of each harvest and the unique character of each wine.” Heniz personally selects a word to describe the personality of the year’s wine which the artist is then free to interpret as he or she sees fit.

This year, the 2017 vintage was named “Solare”, or Radiant, because it was one of the hottest, driest years Tuscany had ever experienced. The limited edition bottles will be auctioned through Sotheby’s online platform to support the winery’s partnership with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York to raise money for its Mind’s Eye program which helps blind and low-vision people experience art.
