The Tasting Panel’s December cover story, “Crushing on Côtes du Rhône,” includes a recommendation of Guigal 2009 Côtes du Rhône Rouge and image on the magazine’s cover. Wine Writer Jonathan Cristaldi spoke with sommelier and Tesse restaurant co-owner Jordan Ogron about Côtes du Rhône wines and the vast world of pairing possibilities they offer. Before he dove into Ogron’s pairing recommendations, Cristaldi noted “is there any question that Rhône Valley producers turn out some of the highest-quality wines at the most affordable prices the world over?” Ogron highlighted that at his restaurant, “the 2009 Guigal was shockingly a huge wine: Almost 10 years old, it’s drinking like a current vintage.” He recommended enjoying the wine alongside Tesse’s skirt steak, as both the wine and dish are “quite smoky and full of black pepper,” which he refers to as an “out of control pairing.”

Given that this particular wine can be the introduction to the entire Rhône Valley for a drinker, as well as the position they occupy in the Rhône, it is not enough for the Guigals to make a good Côtes du Rhône.
